In May 2011, and building on previous collaboration with the Educational Center for Research and Development (ECRD) and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE) and successful development and issuance of the Gender-Sensitive Life skills Reproductive Health Education curriculum in 2009, UNFPA Lebanon partnered with the Saint Joseph University (USJ) for expanding reproductive health (RH) in school-based extracurricular education.
This partnership aims at strengthening institutional capacities of MEHE to integrate RH in extracurricular activities as well as provide intermediate and secondary students with tools, opportunities, and accurate information on reproductive health that will eventually help them take the right decisions about their health. The partnership entails several components such as training on interactive educational tools on reproductive health issues. In order to ensure the sustainability of this approach, an educational course will be developed by USJ and offered yearly by the faculty of educational sciences within the teacher education curriculum.
The partnership with USJ also extends to the youth health clinic at the USJ campus that has previously received support from UNFPA to translate their informative website to Arabic and disseminate it in various public schools. Under the component of operationalizing youth-friendly services, experts at the USJ health clinic will be developing a service guideline that addresses the provision of such services targeting young people.
