This report intendeds to:

- Provide an overview of maternal deaths based on data collected over the period from January to December 2023.

- Document, analyze, and discuss causes of maternal death and recommend necessary measures and interventions that contribute to the overall reduction of maternal mortality.

- Highlight the ongoing efforts that were put in place to strengthen Maternal Death Surveillance and Response (MDSR) in the country including International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) coding, as well as the ones led by the Reproductive Health Sub- Working Group (RHSWG) in following up with all partners in relation to continuity of care.

- Highlight the advocacy efforts of UNFPA to ensure the continuum of care, a key component in maternal mortality reduction.

- Reiterate to policymakers and other relevant stakeholders on the status of maternal health care challenges and maternal death cases, and advise of measures and interventions to be taken to maintain quality care and reduce maternal mortality.

- Reiterate to stakeholders on existing challenges and planned strategies for MDSR to strengthen the existing system.
